Our Most Urgent Goal

For those looking for a Church

Our urgent goal is to help the Churched and the Unchurched find a fellowship where they can be taught the great things God has done for them, to help them experience God's forgiveness in Jesus Christ and to disciple them. As our culture continually looks outside the Church for spiritual help the Church stands as a beacon to those lost in the perilous waters of secularism, anti-christian elements, false religions and more.

How USChurchInfo Came About

While working for several years as a staff associate with a worldwide missions/discipleship-focused organization, I often met with chaplains at the nearby nuclear submarine base. Because of my ministry contacts I would regularly get a call telling me a sailor was shipping out to, moving to or leaving for a particular city. The question invariably followed: Did I know of a good Bible believing church I could suggest suggest to help ease the transition and provide a new place of fellowship?

I was always slightly befuddled by this as there was no way to quickly locate this information except through telephone operators or phone books (remember those?) to find out such information; in other words, I had pretty much the same resources they had. I would gladly call our national headquarters to see if they knew of any churches and they usually didn’t know what to suggest either, unless there happened to be a staff person in the area.

At the time, the internet was still very much in its infancy. Out of frustration with not being able to help our sailors, marines and others in the military and that it just made no sense to me that finding a church was such a huge hassle I decided to do something about it. I decided to explore the potential of the internet for help.

I should mention here that NO denominations had church directory websites either. In fact, when deciding to build USChurchInfo.com I approached them for a listing of their churches and they had never heard of such an idea. They were only too happy to send me their individual church list, if they had one, usually in an Excel spreadsheet and would comment how grateful they were that somebody was actually going to take on such a daunting task.

This was true of every denomination I contacted. Those who didn’t have a computerized list available sent me or sold me their printed church directory. For major and minor denominations to store their data like this all seems so unfamiliar and quaint now but that was all there was at the time…until USChurchInfo.com was built!

Independent churches, of which there are tens of thousands in the directory, were especially challenging since there is no central repository like most denominations. Each one had to be found, typed manually, checked and then rechecked for accuracy, etc.

But now I was on a mission! Many, many Saturdays were spent in the Boston Public library (traveling from southeast CT) printing microfiche yellow page church information and then converting it digitally with OCR technology. Occasionally, I found very talented people to help with data entry and purchased records as I could afford them (they were very expensive at the time). I worked night and day gleaning from the yellow pages and white pages from all over the country and even scrounged recycle trash bins of telephone companies when new phone books were being issued to locate new entries for the database.

Eventually, many tens of thousands of church records had been entered into the database and uploaded to the website now known as USChurchInfo.com. That was the birth of the largest online church directory in the world with nearly 150,000 Protestant church listings. Realizing what an incredible tool this was for U.S. churches and those seeking a church to visit or call their church home I eventually expanded the availability to the whole internet.

Once completed we realized what an incredible tool this was for US Churches and those seeking a Church to visit or call their Church home. We eventually expanded the availability to the whole internet.

And, the response has been slightly overwhelming by churches and individuals seeking spiritual help from their local community and beyond while on vacation, moving to other towns and cities and those just interested in learning more about church in the U.S. I am deeply grateful for them and all those who have made what started out as a dream serving our military into a reality, serving the needs of tens of thousands in the U.S. and around the world. Soli Deo Gloria!

For those Churches who want to grow and make a difference for Christ in the world

Our goal is to have listed at least one church from every city, village, town and hamlet in America. We're making great progress due to those who share our sense of urgency to make information about the U.S. Church available to anyone, anywhere. However, we know there are many churches not yet available online. We think its time!
